Overview

The Metal Fabricator (Fitter) is responsible for fabricating, assembling and fitting structural steel while maintaining quality and accuracy in accordance with the drawings provided and Walters Fitting handbook.


Main responsibilities will include:

  • Fabricating, Assembling and Fitting Structural Steel
  • Rig, hoist and move materials to and from workstation. Performs crane checks daily prior to use to ensure the crane is in working condition, if applicable.
  • Lay out reference points and symbols on the structural steel according to the blueprint.
  • Assemble and fit metal sections and plates using tack welding, bolting or other methods.
  • Set up and operate various equipment such as torches, drills, various clamping tools, squares, disc grinders and other hand held tools.
  • Ensure safe work practices are adhered to and appropriate PPE is worn at all times.
  • Mentors apprentices and junior fitters by sharing knowledge and safe work practices.


Desired Skills and Experience


Required

  • Completion of Secondary School

Desired

  • Completion of three year apprenticeship program in Metal Fabrication

Experience

  • 3 years’ experience in a manufacturing plant working with structural steel

Skills, Knowledge and Competency Requirements

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints
  • Ability to read a tape measure in both metric and imperial
  • Ability to Operate Overhead Cranes
  • Ability to Weld
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety procedures
  • A team player, who can interrelate and operate effectively with peers and other associates within a collegial, yet demanding, work environment
  • Organization Skills and the ability to be flexible in managing changing priorities
  • Communication Skills – Both Written and Oral
  • Attention to detail and high level of accuracy
  • Analytical and Problem Solving skills
