Job Description
Kihew FabCo has an exciting opportunity for Structural Steel and Process Piping Fabricators to join our team in Melville, Saskatchewan. You will be able to work hands-on with state-of-the-art welding technology and scalable workflow. You will be working in collaboration with a progressive and talented group to integrate an Indigenous and non-Indigenous local workforce and work with a training incentive in mind.

ROLE:
The Welder is responsible for planning, welding, installing, and repairing all steel fabrications in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operate manual or fully-automatic welding equipment to fuse various types of steel using processes such shielded metal arc (SMAW) and flux-cored arc welding (FCAW or FCA).
  • Operate manual or fully-automatic flame-cutting equipment.
  • Operate metal shaping machines such as brakes, shears and other metal straightening and bending machines.
  • Use appropriate hand and power tools to properly measure, cut, assemble, weld and install all types of pipe
  • Use grinder to smooth out, weld, or grind parts prior to welding.
  • Repair improperly welded sections of pipe.
  • Position and clamp work pieces together or assemble them in a jig fixture.
  • Read and interpret blueprints or welding process specifications.
  • Inspect subordinate’s work for compliance with the contract plans and specifications, point out deficiencies and explain, and take any corrective action needed.

Note: In addition to these duties personnel are required to carry out such other duties as may be reasonably required in order to support the objectives of the company.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Qualifications

  • Interprovincial Red Seal or Journeyman Welding ticket from a recognized provincial training authority.
  • Valid B-pressure certification for pipelines.
  • Valid CWB certification for structural steel.
  • Various safety tickets/certificates as required depending on project.
  • Must be able to pass a weld test.

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years as a welder in the construction industry.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Knowledge of structural steel and mechanical process piping construction welding techniques.
  • Knowledge of metals, relevant product codes, regulations and laws.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
  • Ability to concentrate on detailed work for long periods.
  • Good vision and hand-eye coordination.

Working Conditions:

  • Office/Shop-based in Melville, SK with occasional travel to project locations.

The Welder reports to the Welding Foreman and Superintendent of the project. The position supervises Welder’s Helpers.

They are overseen by Operations and Project Managers who manage all activities on the shop floor related to production and quality control and ensure delivery schedules are met while controlling labor costs. The Welder monitors production output on a daily basis to make sure production standards are met, contributes to maintenance of production equipment, and is responsible for quality and efficient output. We are also fashioned towards scalability and innovation and look forward to onboarding ambitious personnel with these same objectives.
