Full Job Description

This position is responsible for welding structural steel with stick, mig or flux core process, as well as fabrication of modules, ladders, platforms, handrails and other structural items.

Essential Functions

  • Uphold VME core values: Integrity, Responsibility, Fairness, Clarity
  • Read and understand structural drawings
  • Make welds that pass visual inspection, x-ray or other nondestructive testing that is required
  • Build all the structural pieces by the drawings and standards for each job
  • Layout, torch cut, grind, tack weld and operate overhead cranes
  • Use work order traveler to clock into the specific job function being worked on
  • Follow all work instructions given by the Production Supervisor and/or QC Inspector
  • Practice and participate in Lean Manufacturing initiatives
  • Perform all work in a safe manner in accordance to VME safety policies and procedures
  • Actively promote and personally observe all company policies, employee handbook, safety and security procedures
  • Comply with company work schedule, including but not limited to overtime, evenings, weekends and holidays as necessary
  • Comply with company timekeeping policy

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to pass welding test per ASME code requirements – flux core, hard wire, stick 7018
  • Ability to tack weld
  • Ability to torch cut accurately
  • Ability to gouge
  • Ability to operate overhead crane
  • Ability to use critical thinking to solve problems
  • Ability to work well with management, customers, inspectors and other shop workers
  • Ability to read and understand fabrication drawings
  • Ability to correctly use shop equipment: punch, saw, drill
  • Ability to speak, read and write English
  • Basic math

Working Conditions

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, walk, talk, or hear
  • Use hands and fingers to handle or operate objects, tools, or controls
  • Reach with hands and arms
  • The employee must frequently climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
  • Ability to lift 50-100lbs
  • Work in outdoor conditions and work near moving parts in high, precarious places
  • Occasionally exposed to wet, humid conditions, ambient air, temperature extremes, fume or airborne particles, traffic, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock and vibration
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but sometimes high

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent
  • 2 years of experience as a structural fabricator
  • 0-2 years of experience welding or tack welding
