A day in the life of an SGS
Technical Welding Associate 2

This position will be responsible for the development of welding procedure specifications and testing welders for “B Pressure” renewals, as well as job tests, under the direction of the Welding Services Supervisor.

  • Work with engineers, technologists and trades people to help our clients succeed in the construction of critical oil and gas infrastructure projects
  • Interpret regulatory and statutory requirements, codes and customer specifications relating to fabrication, welding and materials.
  • Determine client requirements and develop testing protocol for welding procedure specifications under the direction of the Welding Services Supervisor.
  • Monitor welding parameters, and write procedure qualification records and welding procedure specifications
  • Prepare in-house work orders that communicate testing requirements to other departments and maintain traceability of samples and associated documentation
  • Interpret laboratory test report results
  • Conduct welder performance qualification testing
  • Assist clients with the implementation welding processes and technologies
  • Help to resolve manufacturing and field issues
  • Keep a clean working environment;
  • Work in compliance with safety regulations.
  • Participate in quality improvement and cost reduction efforts.
  • May be assigned and coordinate special or ad hoc projects as needed.

Qualifications


Education:

  • Post-secondary education in Welding Engineering or Welding Engineering Technology is required
  • Welding Examiner Certificate of Competency issued by ABSA is required or eligible to obtain within 3 months.
  • T.T., C.E.T., or E.I.T. required (I.W.T. or I.W.E. also acceptable with the approval of the welding services manager)
  • CSA W178.2 Level 1 or 2 Welding Inspector Certificate of Compliance is required.


Experience:

  • 1 – 2 years of previous experience in the welding technology field is required.


Qualification:

  • Must be able to read, understand and follow work instructions in a safe, accurate and timely manner.
  • Candidates must be proficient in using various types of computer software (Word, Excel. PowerPoint & Outlook).
  • Proven ability to manage, coordinate and prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced, high pressure, highly professional environment in order to meet tight deadlines.
  • Candidates must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills including grammar and composition.
  • Ability to work well with others & independently.
  • Proven time management skills and a strong attention to detail.
  • Works well under pressure.
  • Extended hours and shift work may be required from time to time.
  • Travel to other SGS locations or client location may be required from time to time.
  • Ensures full compliance with the company’s Health & Safety, Code of Integrity, and Professional Conduct policies.
  • Must demonstrate a strong working knowledge of ASME Section IX, Section VIII Div. 1, B31.1, B31.3, and CSA Z662
  • Familiarity with API, NACE and AWS codes and standards would be an asset
  • Ability to compose clear and concise technical reports with attention to detail.
  • Superior organizational, time management, communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Must have valid driver’s license
  • Must be able, willing and authorized to travel throughout Canada, the United States and if required outside North America
