The Technologist, Machining & Welding assists faculty by overseeing the use of facilities including developing instructional plans in consultation with faculty for demonstrating practical skills based on established learning objectives and completing remedial instructions for those students who require further assistance in mastering the practical skills. This individual will also be responsible for the set-up, operation, and maintenance of a variety of machines and equipment, providing technical support for matters of a complex nature. The incumbent will provide input into ordering material and supplies and will also maintain inventories.

This position will work on-site five days per week at the Doon campus in Kitchener located at 299 Doon Valley Drive and the Guelph campus, located at 460 Speedvale Ave West.

Responsibilities:
Demonstrates practical skills and equipment safety

Provides remedial instruction specifically to students requiring further assistance

Provides input on course content and set-up of programs and develops demonstration plans to teach practical skills that are based on established learning objectives

Provides guidance and advice to part-time employees

Provides guidance and orientation to new faculty who are unfamiliar with the environment

Responsible for evaluating equipment and supplies

Works with the program administrator to ensure supplies, tools and parts required for the shop are ordered and maintains inventory of all supplies and operating equipment.

Repairs equipment as necessary

Assists in maintaining the welding and fabrication shop facilities by evaluating the equipment and supplies in preparation for ordering

Prepares purchase requisitions according to college policies and procedures for equipment and instructional supplies

Qualifications:
Licensed Journeyperson holding valid Certificate of Qualification in an industrial trade such as Welding (456A), Metal Fabricator – Fitter (437A) or Industrial Mechanic Millwright (433A), or three-year Diploma or Degree in Manufacturing Engineering Technology or a related field

Five years of work experience with Oxy Acetylene torches, Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) and/or Gas Metal Arc Welding (GTAW) is required; experience with Mills and Lathes is preferred

Flexible with strong organizational skills

Excellent interpersonal skills

Ability to communicate professionally (verbal and written) with students, program team, vendors, stakeholders, etc.

Ability to relate to learners working at different skill levels in a shop environment

Strong commitment to ensuring student success

Excellent interpersonal skills with a flexible approach to problem-solving
