Overview

The Welding Trade Manager is responsible for the safe, productive and efficient operation of all work performed by the welding department at Vancouver Shipyards. Responsibilities include the planning and control of projects, ensuring that they are appropriately manned and supervised to meet schedule and customer requirements, and that all work is carried out in accordance with shipyard safety, quality and ISO standards and procedures. The Trade Manager provides leadership and directions, ensuring that efficiency and quality levels are consistently maintained to successfully deliver required outputs.

Duties and Accountabilities

Ensures work progression in accordance with safety, cost, quality, and schedules.

Responsible for interpreting and assigning work orders and ensuring work orders are completed in a timely manner.

Reviews construction plan and schedule. Allocates manpower in accordance with schedule and priorities emergency break down work.

Partners with Trade Development Managers to ensure trade workers have the skills, equipment, training, and certifications required to perform planned work activities.

Identifies, develops, and implements welding standards and processes to ensure consistent delivery of outputs.

Facilitates “cross-SOC” quality process issues and ensures resolution/communication feedback.

Directly responsible for the safety of all reporting trades employees.

Leads implementation of HSEQ plans on shop floor and strives to eliminate safety hazards at every opportunity along with all reporting employees.

Works with production managers to plan and execute maintenance to avoid any disruption to production.

Works with Facilities and Procurement department to ensure trade equipment is maintained and material requirements are met in an efficient manner.

Follows and implements the collective agreement and standard methodologies to lead labour effectively.

Responsible for timekeeping administration of direct reports and indirect reports.

Responsible for employee relations matters including discipline, performance/attendance management, termination of employment, and promotions/ demotions of bargaining unit employees.

Manages designated department, including recruitment, training, development, and performance management. Maintains succession plans and ensures the creation and follow-through of employee development plans.

Establishes high levels of teamwork and morale. Ensures all employees are provided with a work environment that is respectful and inclusive.

Works with disability and rehabilitation consultants in assisting injured employees to return to work on graduated return by identifying appropriate tasks and conditions.

Implements and supports continuous improvement initiatives.

Develops and monitors labour and material budgets, and periodically reports on cost performance and variances.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

College degree or trades certification. Multi-ticketed is an asset.

Minimum 8 years of experience in construction/project management in heavy industrial environment, or advanced education in a related field with 6 years related work experience.

Minimum 4 years of supervisory and employee relations experience in a unionized environment.

Skills, Knowledge and Competencies

Knowledge of trade responsibilities specific to heavy manufacturing industry with respect to preventative maintenance, and emergency break down repair (welding, metal fabrication, electrical, pipefitting, paint/sandblasting, mechanical, rigging).

Ability to generate Bill of Materials (BOM) for new vessel projects including needed consumable.

Management and leadership skills with ability to empower and work with and through others to achieve desired results.

Communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to build an effective team, implement change, and lead others towards a shared goal.

Time management and organization skills with dedication to follow-up and follow-through.

Conflict resolution and negotiations skills to resolve disagreements quickly and effectively, bringing a problem-solving attitude to conflicting approaches.

Commitment to safety and quality, and significant experience in the application of behavioral based safety.

Proficiency with MS Office products and web-based applications.
