Overview

This position will function as a VERT I at the Wayne Equipment Shop in Wayne County. This is skilled mechanic work. Employees perform a range of progressively tasks involving services and repair of mechanical systems of gasoline/diesel powered automotive and heavy equipment. Employees may perform mechanic work at various levels. Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the type of mechanical system. Must be able to perform skilled mechanic work on systems: Preventive Maintenance, Tires, and Tubes, Wheel & Rims, Cranking Systems, Lighting Systems, Cooling Systems, Fuel System, and Hydraulic System. Note: Employee is required to furnish a complete set of mechanic tools.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must meet both the education requirements and all posted knowledge, skills and abilities in order to qualify.

Experience in the repair and replacement of tires

Experience in performing preventive maintenance on a minimum of one of the following: light, medium, heavy-duty trucks and heavy equipment

Skill in the use of at least 2 tools and pieces of equipment used in the equipment shop such as wrenches, sockets, battery charger, hydraulic jacks, loader, forklift, automotive/truck lift, fuel service truck, tire changer, tire balancer, welder, cutting torch, diagnostic equipment, computer, tire jack, tire balance machine, pneumatic wrench, diagnostic gauges, electronic tester, air impact wrench, air compressor, air gun, torque wrench.

Additional Expectations:
Ability to repair and maintain automotive and heavy equipment, and diagnose problems using diagnostic equipment, prepare paperwork essential to employment and equipment repair. Ability to understand both written and oral instructions, move parts and materials necessary to repair and maintain equipment. Ability to safely operate equipment for testing purposes. Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments. Ability to demonstrate commitment to provide safe working environment by leading by example. Ability to read and interpret Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manuals. Ability to read schematics, diagrams, and sketches and possesses the physical strength to move relatively heavy objects. Must be able to perform heavy lifting. Employee is required to furnish a complete set of mechanic tools. Must be able to obtain a valid NC Class A CDL with N endorsement within 90 calendar days of employment (Permit within 60 calendar days of employment). Steel toed shoes are required. Pre-employment drug testing is required. As a condition of employment, release forms (ALCDRG-01 and ALDCRG-06) must be signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Ability to work in emergency situations and inclement weather. Operate State vehicle.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
