PWO Canada is a Tier 1 and Tier 2 supplier for auto manufacturers globally. We are one of five subsidiaries in the PWO AG Group, manufacturing lightweight metal components for the automotive industry.

Purpose of the Position

The Weld Technician performs and evaluates weld quality to ensure compliance.

Nature and Scope of the Position

The position provides lab analysis support and evaluates weld quality, integrity, dimensional measurements, and compliance to weld specifications through the process of cutting, sectioning, and applying chemical etchants to weld defects. Flaws and other discontinuities were examined through the use of Cut and Etch equipment and physical tear down.

The incumbent must be a self-starter and have the ability to prioritize and organize a high workload.

Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma and Quality Assurance Certificate. Welding Engineering Technology/Technician diploma is preferred.

Knowledge and Skills: Ability to use measuring equipment, micrometers, verniers, height gauges, and understand inspection methods and procedures. Knowledge in geometric dimensioning and tolerance is preferred and one must have the ability to interpret blueprints. Basic knowledge of MIG, Spot, and Friction welding is an asset.

Communication Skills: Strong oral and written communication skills are required for normal technical/business communication.

Nature and Length of Experience: Two years of experience in a similar job and manufacturing environment preferred. The quality background is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare all test coupons for welding performance qualification testing including but not limited to sawing, shearing, grinding, etc.; Cut, polish and etch weld cross-sections to facilitate weld examination per specified sample size and frequencies.
  • Perform inspection and testing for visible defects, correct dimensions, weld penetration, and conformance with engineering drawings and specifications; examine to detect flaws, such as cracks, cold welds, porosity, and undercut.
  • Ensure all inspection and measuring equipment is compliant with current calibration; Assist as needed in the calibration and certification of all process inspection and test equipment.
  • Provide cut and etch data to Engineers, Quality Management, Program Management, and Production Management for PPAPs, IATF audit, Prototypes, Special Request, Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly, and Annual Validations.
  • Maintain close communication with Engineers, Robot technicians, Quality Technicians, and Production Employees operating weld cells during shift.
  • Develop and maintain Robot Tech training on cut and etch processes Shape wide.
  • Participates in first off and last off reviews of welding processes.
  • Conducts internal Audits, such as Bend end Test Results and Weld Repairs.
  • Updates and maintain Work Procedure Specifications (WPS).
  • Monitors the Production Operator’s product checking methods.
  • Inspect welds on all types of assemblies and sub-assemblies and report defects to Weld Engineer or other appropriate sources.
  • Makes accept/reject determinations with computer-aided software.
  • Perform Cut & Etch test per customer requirement.
  • Create reports for collected data and visualize data regularly.
  • Operate equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Able to manage data and create reports as required.
  • Responsible for the safe handling, storage, and disposal of acids and chemicals.
  • Provide input for inspection methods and improvements related to the job.
  • Ensure the cleanliness, order of inspection, and test stations per 5S standards.
  • Attend or organize departmental meetings to clarify reports or assigned activities.
  • Follows and performs the instructions as outlined in the Work Area Reference Manual(s) applicable to the department.
  • Follows and performs the processes and instructions outlined in the Process House that are applicable to the department.
  • Compliance to all company HR policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for working safely, complying with safety policies and procedures, and wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) required in the designated areas as per company policy.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: $24.00-$32.00 per hour

Schedule:

  • 8 hour shift
  • Monday to Friday

Ability to commute/relocate:

  • Kitchener, ON: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (preferred)

Education:

  • AEC / DEP or Skilled Trade Certificate (preferred)
