Job Description

Under the direct supervision of the Solid Waste Maintenance Shop Supervisor or Welder II, this position performs repairs and maintenance for all city-owned solid waste containers and trains and oversees the work of Utility Workers at the Solid Waste Paint and Repair Shop. This position will be required to work shifts including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather, as well as overtime as needed by the department.

This position is considered weather essential personnel.

Performs semi-skilled acetylene cutting torch and arc welding on containers.

Repairs all side loader and front-loader trash containers in Paint Shop area or in the field.

Cleans and paints trash containers as needed in the shop area or in the field.

Repairs damage to wood or chain link fences or other property as needed.

Oversees the work of and trains Utility Workers.

Keeps shop area and equipment clean and in good working order.

Operates forklift and container wrecker when needed and to move, replace and take care of new container sets.

Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers.

Ability to read and follow instructions.

Ability to read and effectively use City Maps.

Demonstrated communication and organizational skills…

Working knowledge of welding and cutting of steel.

Ability to handle and bend steel as needed.

Skill in running and maintaining a shear machine, as well as all hand tools, sledge hammers, grinders, power tools, airless paint guns/sprayers, one ton container/wrecker truck, ½ ton pickup and forklifts.

Ability to work safely around power equipment and heavy hand tools.

Licenses/Certification

Welding Certification is preferred.

Required Qualifications

High school or GED is required. Vocational or Technical School coursework in welding and a minimum of one to two years of welding experience is preferred. Valid Class C Texas Driver’s License is required.

One to two years of welding experience is preferred.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to turn over heavy containers and lift materials of up to 75 pounds; occasionally lift over 100 pounds with assistance; pull with a force of at least 94 pounds; and throw materials overhead. Requires constant and sustained standing, bending, squatting and lifting.
