Job Duties:
- Analyzes drawings, sketches, routers and work instructions to select the appropriate welding
equipment and to plan the layout, assembly and welding of the product.
- Determines required equipment and welding method, applying knowledge of metallurgy,
geometry, and welding techniques.
- Uses tape measures, squares, levels and Jigs to set up the welding.
- Cuts workpiece, using powered saws, hand shears, or chipping knife.
- Uses bolts, clamps, and tack-weld parts to secure product in position for welding.
- Selects proper welding heat and selects the proper type and size of weld for the correct
penetration and strength of welded material.
- Uses hand-welding or flame cutting equipment to weld or join metal components or to fill holes,
indentations or seams of metal products.
- Welds flat, vertical and horizontal surface to standards.
- Examines work pieces for defects and measures work pieces with straightedge or templates to
ensure conformance with specification.
- Removes rough spots from workpiece, using portable grinder, hand file or scraper.
- Observes tests on welded surfaces such as hydrostatic, x-ray and dimension tolerance to
evaluate weld quality and conformance to specifications.
- May train new or junior welders.
Required Skills & Experience:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and five to eight years related
experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must have at least 5 years’ experience in:
o Gas Metal-Arc Welding (GMAW) a.k.a. Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding,
o Shielded Metal-Arc Welding (SMAW) a.k.a. Stick welding, and
o Submerged-Arc Welding (SAW)
- Must be able to interpret and follow Welding Procedure Specifications.
- Must be able to pass 3G Welding Procedure Specification tests
- Must be able to operate angle grinder, manual vertical band saw, pedestal grinder, and various
clamps and fixtures.
- Experience with Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) a.k.a. Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding is a
plus.
