Overview

This position is responsible for welding materials to build vessels or components as specified by blueprints, work order, or layout using arc-cutting equipment, GTAW equipment and GMAW equipment

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Welds on tanks, heat exchangers and subassemblies in the GMAW or GTAW processes.
  • Reviews the work order, bill of material (BOM), and blueprint to understand the job details.
  • Gathers parts and chooses appropriate tools and equipment to set up work area.
  • Performs grinding, fitting-up, fixturing parts, sanding and welding per design drawing.
  • Moves product through the area with equipment such as a forklift and/or overhead crane.
  • Changes out consumables and handles upkeep on tools such as sharpening tungsten etc.
  • Keeping time and inventory in Epicor.
  • Cleans up area and equipment as needed.
  • Attends safety training and department meetings.
  • Provides guidance and training for co-workers with less experience.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • High School or equivalent.
  • 2-5 years prior welding experience, ASME experience a plus.

DECISIONMAKING RESPONSIBIITIES

Applies knowledge and skills to determine and/or apply established procedures/techniques and ensure safety standards are met. On occasion will design and build fixtures to meet product needs.

COMPETENCIES, SKILLS, CERTIFICATIONS & ABILITIES

  • Ability to read measuring tools such as tape measure and calipers
  • GMAW or GTAW certification.
  • Ability to read blueprints and welding symbols.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient personal computer and Microsoft Office skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in a manufacturing environment. When in the shop environment, conditions vary based on the area.

PHYSICAL & MENTAL DEMANDS

GMAW – Gas Metal Arc Welder

  • Requires problem solving, interpreting data, and extended focus.
  • Frequently involves sitting, standing, bending and twisting at the neck, simple grasping, and fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally involves walking, bending at the waist, squatting, climbing, kneeling, crawling, twisting at the waist, power grasping, pushing and pulling, reaching above and below shoulder level, lifting and carrying up to 40 lbs.
  • Involves driving a forklift, working around equipment and machinery, walking on uneven ground, exposure to excessive noise, extreme temperatures/humidity, operating of foot controls and repetitive foot movement, and is required to utilize protective equipment as needed.

GTAW – Gas Tungsten Arc Welder

  • Requires problem solving, interpreting data, and extended focus.
  • Constantly involve simple grasping and lifting up to 10 lbs.
  • Frequently involves standing.
  • Occasionally involves walking, bending at the neck and waist, squatting, climbing, kneeling, crawling, twisting at the neck and waist, power grasping, pushing and pulling, reaching above and below shoulder level, lifting and carrying up to 40lbs.
  • Involves driving a forklift, working around equipment and machinery, walking on uneven ground, extreme temperatures/humidity, and is required to utilize protective equipment as needed.
