Overview
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the direct supervision of the Field Operations Director(s), individual will assist the Welder Specialist’s perform a majority of the welding and fabrication tasks.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
Assist lead welders in performing welding, brazing, thermal and arc cutting operations
Use hoists, wrenches and hammers to lift, move and clamp work materials into position or onto tables
Oversee the scheduled maintenance of welding and fitting equipment to ensure they are operational
Transport work pieces to construction sites by manual means or using hand truck
Use grinders and scrapers to remove rough spots and marks from work pieces to ensure smooth surface
Prepare objects for crane movement by attaching grappling equipment such as cables and pulleys
Clean work pieces using chemical solutions to remove impurities such as slag, rust and grease
Connect had torches to fuel gas cylinders or electric power source
Activate electric generators for welding by starting gasoline engine
Maintain a clean and hazard free work environment for efficient work operations
Wear appropriate clothing in compliance with safety protocols
Perform preventative maintenance of welding equipment by lubricating and fixing work parts
Maintain good knowledge or welding techniques and processes
Read and interpret blueprints for a welding project
Assist welders in loading or moving fairly heavy work pieces during work operations
May be required to work at different job sites through the Hidalgo County jurisdiction
Working hours subject to change as deemed necessary to the District’s needs
Performs other duties as assigned
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Graduation from a high school or equivalent (GED)
Individual must possess from one to three (1-3) years of experience in welding
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATION
Must have a current valid Texas motor vehicle operator’s license
Must be able to be insured by the District’s insurance carrier
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Individual must possess knowledge of methods, materials, equipment and tools used in all types of welding
Operate internal combustion engine and hydraulic equipment
Work independently in the absence of supervisor
Understand and follow oral and written directions
Will be required for extended periods of time shop environment, exposure to head, dust, dirt and noise

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand. The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; use hands to find, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop and kneel.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move over twenty-five (25) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
