Overview

Job Summary

A Welding Specialist is responsible for the safe, efficient performance of any welding required on both new construction and in-service piping and valves, general structural repair/modification, heat transfer/exchange equipment, vessels, filters, tanks, furnaces, and other general maintenance work, including operating minor lift equipment and rigging.

Primary Job Functions

Receive daily work schedule and daily work permits to determine activities to be performed

Physically inspects and monitors equipment and/or the work area

Review work instructions to validate tasks to complete work assignment (Job Safety Analysis)

Lift, push / pull, up to 50 pounds. Carry at least 30 pounds for approximately 20 feet

Work off-hours and overtime as required

Maintain housekeeping in assigned areas according to Refinery standards

Climb stairs and ladders, and work off of fixed, temporary or portable elevated platforms

Comply with program support through procedure adherence

Able to work in shops and field settings

Demonstrate the ability to effectively develop, communicate, and implement plans

Effective in oral and written communications, including effective meeting skills

Ability to work with others in a team environment, including working toward team goals

Performs position in a manner that demonstrates professionalism, knowledge, understanding, and commitment for health and safety of one’s self, others, and the surrounding communities and environment

Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSA’s)

Mechanical/maintenance experience in a refinery, chemical plant or other manufacturing plant is preferred

Ability to lay out, position, and secure parts/piping and assemblies according to specifications

Ability to perform the gas and arc welding of butt, fillet, and socket welds in carbon and low-alloy steel piping used in the compression, pumping, and transmission of crude petroleum, petroleum products, fuel gases, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and water.

Ability to perform shielded metal-arc welding, submerged arc welding, gas tungsten-arc welding, gas metal-arc welding, flux-cored arc welding, plasma arc welding, or oxyacetylene welding process or by a combination of these processes using a manual, semiautomatic, mechanized, or automatic welding technique or a combination of these techniques

Ability to select type and size of pipe according to API specifications

Welds API and other components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions

Knowledge of system operation, with ability to read and following blueprints

Possess basic rigging knowledge

5 years related experience or technical training is preferred

Knowledge and the ability to use craft tools (straightedge, combination square, calipers, ruler, etc) is preferred

Effective oral and written communications, including effective meeting skills
