The Role:

To perform all types of welding, cutting and trade assist tasks to fabricate, install, maintain and repair all equipment. Assesses, recommend, and creates methods to improve welding procedures and equipment service life.

  • Interprets pipeline schematics, complex structural and fabrication drawings and sketches, plan details or working procedure, tools and material requirements, as to perform job assignments and instruct others.
  • Selects and uses correct welding; burning and trade assist protective equipment.
  • Perform calculations necessary for fabrications and uses measuring, checking and layout tools of various kinds. Fabricate jigs and fixtures when necessary.
  • Select, set up and operate various hand and power tools and all types of welding, cutting, gouging and beveling equipment.
  • Fabricate and install structural, plate and pipe sections as per drawings and field measurements.
  • Select joint design and welding process to suit a specific task for maximum efficiency and quality.
  • Identify materials that can be cut or gouged either by AAC, plasma arc and oxy-fuel equipment.
  • Identify weldable stainless/alloy steel materials and select consumables for use with various welding processes.
  • Perform manual stress relieving, pre-heating and post-heating. Set up and perform heat re-aligning of deformed parts. Control distortion during welding.
  • Set up and perform manual or thermite welds on rail joints.
  • Perform welding to meet CWB and TSSA standards.
  • Inspects weld visually and use mag-particle and die-penetrant for non-destructive testing methods.
  • Possess a working knowledge of pressure vessel and steel construction welding codes and specifications.
  • Identifies pipe schedules and fittings prior to fabrication or repair.
  • Perform rigging tasks using all necessary equipment and accessories, as required.

About You:

  • Minimum high school diploma/GED
  • 456A Welder or 437A Metal Fabricator (Fitter) Certificate of Qualification or Interprovincial Red Seal is required
  • TSSA or CWB tickets are considered an asset
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Self-starter with the ability to follow directions and work in a team environment with minimal supervision

Work Environment:

  • Heavy industrial shop environment
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment
  • The use of respirators, fresh air breathing apparatus and standard plant safety equipment may also be required
  • Required to climb, crouch, lift, etc. heavy objects, on a repetitive basis
  • Exposure to noise, heights, confined spaces, lighting conditions, materials, products and by-products associated with the manufacture of steel, temperature and weather extremes that require the use of specialized protective devices or equipment

Hours of Work:

  • 8-hour day schedule or continuous 12-hour rotating shifts with extended hours as required due to period of peak workloads
  • Occasional overtime may be required
