Job Description:
Position Objective

This position is for experienced welders who are able to use the necessary equipment for Mig and Tig welding of structures, enclosures, pipes, and other components, as well as general fabrication and refurbishment, and operating equipment and heavy machinery.

Nature and Scope

An employee in this position must be able to work with their peers as well as individually, and follow directions from team leads, supervisors, and managers. They must follow work instructions and processes, weld according to part drawings, execute tasks, and assist higher level welders/fabricators while remaining productive and efficient. Employees in this position are expected to complete their work with minimal instruction but should ask for help when required.

They must have the ability to take coaching and feedback from Team Leads, Certified Welding Inspector, supervisor, or respective manager to continually improve performance, productivity and/or quality of completed product. Employees in this position are subject to regular audits looking at the frequency their products must be reworked or rejected. They also must work independently and remain productive without constant, direct supervision.

Team lead, supervisor or respective manager will decide required working hours and job priorities and fabricator will decide the approach to take when producing or fabricating a part.

Employees in this role must pass and maintain necessary required welding qualification tests. They must be fully able to read, comply and understand welding procedures, and must be able to climb and work from ladders and scaffolds.

All Work is completed on a manufacturing shop floor, and an employee in this role must be able to recognize and avoid hazards and unsafe operation of equipment.

Employees may be required to take a welding test to demonstrate proficiency prior to being hired.

Equipment that may need to be operated to complete duties:

  • Welding equipment for GTAW, GMAW, or FCAW
  • Fabrication equipment such as a saw, plasma cutter, laser table, press brake, or drill press
  • Measurement tools and gauges for checking work
  • Forklift, crane, or transporter for moving materials, tools, and equipment
  • Computer for completing production orders, recording work hours, and online training
  • CAM Software for automated machines (i.e. laser table, break press, etc.)
  • Other equipment that may be necessary for completion of work

Principal Accountabilities

  • Comply with all of Solar’s Environmental, Health and Safety Programs, Regulations and Guidelines, Policies, procedures, and best practices; use proper PPE, Smoke Eaters, etc
  • Weld per AWS D1.1 or ASME Sec.9 B31.3/B31.8 standards and comply with PED standards when specified
  • Comply with Solar Turbines standards for pressure holding vessels and structural elements.
  • Clean welds including the cutting and repairing of unacceptable welds.
  • Check own work for conformance to welding procedure and specifications.
  • Ensure that the welding procedures have been followed and quality has not been compromised.
  • Have work regularly inspected via Radiography (X-Ray) Inspection
  • Maintain a job log

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have 3-6 years experience with GMAW (Mig) and/or GTAW (Tig)
  • Must already hold or be willing to certify on specified welding methods.
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
  • Knowledge of all safety and environmental restrictions affecting the facility.
  • Experience Pipe Fitting is preferred for Tig welders
  • AWS or equivalent certification preferred for all welders
