Job Description Summary

As a GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) Services Components Operation (SCO) Welder Fabricator, you will safely and independently perform welding and machining on components for commercial nuclear power plants. In this position you are responsible for performing hand and semi-automatic welding on a wide variety of material, parts, and assemblies. Additionally, you will setup and operate N/C or conventional machining equipment. You will also have ownership of safety, compliance, quality, and productivity. Anticipated shift assignment for Welder Fabricator is 11am – 7pm.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Embrace GEH’s nuclear safety culture, where work is performed with an overriding priority on integrity, safety, security, and quality. Ensure conformance with all compliance, safety and quality regulations. Understand and adhere to safety protocols for materials, equipment, and facilities in SCO.

Responsible for the assembly and welding of components and sub-assemblies to produce a final assembly. Weld a variety and combination of ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

Set up a variety of welding equipment and fixtures, performing assembly, fit up and tack welding. Devise holding fixtures for welding sub-assemblies and install the sub-assemblies into the final assembly.

Set/adjust various welding equipment cycles to obtain proper welding application parameters.

Perform hard surface welding and flame spray.

Use single and multipass welding techniques on a variety of parts that are either plate, solid bar, or tubing with varying wall thickness and standard or non-standard joints, such as open butt, “J” or “U”, that will pass x-ray, guided-bend and tensile tests, liquid penetrant, and visual examination.

Heat straighten, clean, brush and deslag welds. Deburr parts, sub-assemblies, and final assemblies.

Start up, set up and operate laser weld equipment.

Set up and operate conventional or numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools that require high skill to setup and operate.

Machine all types of metals, ferrous and non-ferrous, and/or synthetics and plastics.

Layout structural supports using templates and measuring devices. Mark, cut and cope using mechanical saws, burning by plasma or oxy-acetylene. Layout and drill structural members using radial drills, magnetic base drill, etc.

Follow sequences, directions, tooling, and all machine and welding parameters where required.

Monitor own work with tools, gages and fixtures. Perform product quality inspections to identify and correct quality problems. Prepare and analyze weld samples.

Perform basic maintenance; troubleshoot process / equipment problems.

Position and move heavy components and assemblies with cranes and hoists, fork trucks, hand carts, air pallets or by hand.

Train operators on equipment on which s/he is qualified.

Maintaining good housekeeping practices and conform to all safety and quality requirements.

Perform other relevant duties as assigned.

Position hourly pay rate will be $28.015, with progression possible to $32.045 after 6 months based on satisfactory performance.

Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED.

Five years of experience in machine shop welding, including at least three years of experience with TIG welding.

Eligibility Requirements:
Job interview will include demonstration of capability to successfully complete manual groove and fillet weld joints.

Must be able to successfully complete a prescribed qualification test within 3 months, which includes a pipe weld in a restrictive, 6G position and combination plate weld test in 2F, 2G and 3F positions (stainless steel).

Ability to stand for long periods of time.

Ability to exert considerable and continuous mental and visual concentration during weld application and setup.

Ability to withstand heat exposure. Will be exposed to hot, welded surfaces.

Ability to successfully complete baseline eye exam.

Ability to wear welding helmets, shields, safety glasses and other PPE as required.

Must be able to move, lift or slide heavy parts (50 lbs.) with crane, cart, fork truck, air pallets, or by hand.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide and work with decimals.

Ability to operate computers.

Ability and willingness to work overtime without previous notice as necessary.

Anticipated shift assignment for Welder Fabricator is 11am – 7pm. Shift assignment may change in the future.

Desired Characteristics / Qualifications:
Trade school, or equivalent educational background, in relevant discipline (welding, machining, etc.).

Welder qualification, such as pipe weld in a 6G position and combination plate welds in 2F, 2G, and 3F positions.

Experience in performing weld applications in various positions for extended periods of time.

Two years of experience in setting up and operating CNC or manual machine tools such as mills, drills and lathes.

Experience in use of measuring instruments such as scales, micrometers, indicators, gages, etc. Exposure to total indicator readings (TIR).

Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, sketches, etc. Be fully knowledgeable of dimensional tolerancing.

Strong communication skills, both oral and written

Strong interpersonal skills. Direct communication with GEH/GNF senior management and external customers is required in this position.

Proficiency in MS Suite, including MS Outlook.
