Welder/Forger

Summary Statement

Welder/Forger aids in the fabrication of sharp-edged dies using tool steels within an indoor manufacturing environment. Handling and preparation of dies with stretching and bending machines, cutting, and grinding equipment. Welder/Forger communicates with supervisor through engineered drawings and sketches in the building of the tools and cutting dies. Perform daily duties of equipping tools, materials, and supplies for self and to other workers; cleaning work area, machines, and tools; as well as preparing and holding materials or tools for other workers.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Forge cutting dies and trimming blades using steel plate
  • General knowledge of the various types of cutting dies. Working knowledge in the use of hydraulic stretching and bending machines to form steel
  • Working knowledge in the use of cutting equipment (band saw, shear, horizontal cut-off saw)
  • Experience in the use of grinding equipment (cut-off wheel, belt sander, face-off wheel, grinding wheel)
  • In depth knowledge of Mig welders, Tig welders and Gas welding.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of measuring equipment such as ruler, vernier, tape measure etc.
  • Knowledge of the process of forging (tools and techniques)
  • Abilities to read engineered drawings and sketches to understand the requirements of building the tools and dies
  • Ensure that work area, including machinery, is always clean and safe
  • Equipment Maintenance – Assist in and perform routine maintenance on equipment and determine when/what maintenance is required.
  • Assists in the conducting of tests and inspections of products,or processes to evaluate quality or performance
  • Effectively communicate with supervisor and co-workers and ability to work in a team environment
  • Work safely while maintaining productivity and ODC quality standards, being familiar with the ISO requirements and knowledge of WHMIS

Minimum Qualifications and Skills

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required
  • Deals with changing priorities in a quick and efficient manner
  • Prior experience as an Industrial Welder or Metal Fabricator would be considered an asset
  • Mechanical knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance is an asset
  • Experience with Mig, Tig and Gas welding equipment.
  • General knowledge of various types of cutting dies
  • Ability to work with periodic supervision within set priorities
