Welder Helper/Carpenter

The Welder Helper/Carpenter Helper is responsible for assisting the Welder to complete various types of tasks involving metal/wood material. The incumbent will operate both hand and power tools. Job assignments may vary on a daily basis. Applicants must be able to work outside in extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, rain) and also will be responsible for the safe operation of heavy equipment and machinery. Actively maintain up keep of your working area.

Essential Job Functions:

Cleans weld joints to remove impurities such as slag, rust, and grease, using wire brush or portable grinder. Operate forklift equipment at an advanced skill level.

Can and often performs tasks, contingent on the level of experience and directions from the carpenter.

Assist in staging materials and necessary tools to execute each work activity, and will assist in the layout and measuring of materials for installation.

Connects hoses from hand torch and beveling machine to oxygen and fuel gas cylinders or connects cables from power source to electrode holder.

Sweeping & cleaning production areas

Read a tape measure

Retrieving all necessary tools from the tool room on a daily bases.

Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

Knowledge of proper use of oxygen/acetylene cutting equipment, preferred.

1-2 years stick welding experience

Knowledge of proper use of equipment such as welder torch, electrode holder, drill press, gas welding and welding electrode, etc., preferred.

Ability to use time and equipment efficiently in order to complete projects on time

Ability to handle stress and possess positive trait even in difficult or challenging situations

Physical Demand/Work Environment:

The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, or crouch.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Visual acuity must be adequate to perform all required tasks in a safe manner.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
Work may require occasional weekend and/or evening work.

The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, vehicles and equipment.

Experience/Education Requirement:

  • Basic math knowledge
  • Required to pass internal welding test
  • Basic machine knowledge/experience a plus
  • Spanish speaking is a plus (not required)
