Overview

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision perform a variety of skilled welding, brazing, and metal cutting work involved in the design, fabrication and repairs to parts, structures and refuse dumpsters.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

This position exercises no supervision.

IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Prepare all types of metal for fabrication. Lay-out, cut, and fit together materials for welding.

Select proper welding heat and proper size and type of electrodes to obtain penetration and strength for welded materials.

Fabricate parts in making repairs and modifications to structures and roll-off and front-load dumpsters.

Braze, solder, and coat ferrous and nonferrous metals.

Inspect, clean (brush), and grind welds.

Maintain necessary records.

Operate grounds keeping equipment.

Self-motivated and able to work with minimum supervision.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:
Standard methods, practices, tools, and materials used in welding and maintenance.

Occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with safe welding practices.

Safe driving principles and practices.

Safe operation of power equipment and tools.

Skill to:
Operate forklift, mower, tractor and articulating boom lift.

Operate and the care of welding equipment, gas torch equipment, plasma cutter, metal cutoff saw, table saw, drill press, hand held grinder, hand held drill and other hand held power equipment.

Use hand tools and equipment for the repair of containers, equipment and structures.

Ability to:
Read and work from plans, blueprints, sketches and broken parts.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

To decipher and properly fix and repair assigned items.

Fabricate parts and structures.

Perform tasks connected with welding and equipment repair.

To be self-motivated and work independently.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Experience and Training Guidelines:
Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:

Experience:
Previous experience in the operation of welding equipment, gas torch equipment, plasma cutter, metal cut-off saw, table saw, drill press, hand help grinder, hand held drill, and other commonly used hand tools in welding is required.

One (1) year of experience of welding and fabrication is required.

Education/Training:
Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for a successful job performance.

Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in welding or approved welding experience is required.

License or Certificate:
A valid Texas Class C driver’s license; the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is required.

Special Requirements:
Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:

Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, and climb.

With or without accommodation, ability to lift and transport up to 75 pounds.

Exposure to cold, heat, noise, sparks, outdoors, heights, vibration, confining work space, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards.

Ability to travel to different work sites.
