Position Information
TxDOT’s Fleet Operations Division is looking for a Metal Fabrication Specialist I or II based in Amarillo, TX. At TxDOT, we supply the diagnostic, hand, and power tools you need to get the job done, so you don’t have to provide your own tools. We also offer company-sponsored CDL training with $0 upfront monetary commitment. Earn your full salary while training with lodging, transportation, and per-diem provided if necessary.
TxDOT is offering a recruitment bonus of up to $5,000 for the hired candidate who is not currently employed by the agency.

Position Description
Fabricates, assembles, installs and repairs metal components using welding or sheet metal working procedures and techniques, tools and equipment. Performs some design work.
Metal Fabrication Specialist I
Employees at this level perform assignments following specific instructions and are subject to frequent review by the immediate supervisor.
Metal Fabrication Specialist II
Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties:
Metal Fabrication Specialist I
Assists in other shops.
Cleans, services and maintains shop equipment.
Constructs equipment from blueprints and shop drawings.
Inspects own work for compliance with specifications.
Assists with performing soldering, brazing and welding on specific equipment or structures.
Modifies new and existing equipment.
Operates metal fabricating machines and equipment including shears, brakes, presses, punch presses, acetylene torches and electric arc and carbon arc welders; as required moves items related to these activities.
Performs metal work and maintenance at marine facilities.
Performs shop clean-up work.
Performs welding, cutting, bending and shaping.
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Metal Fabrication Specialist II
All of the above, and
Orders stock and maintains inventory.
Prepares and lays out materials for welding, cutting, bending and shaping.
Repairs radiators and tanks.
Solders, brazes and welds specific equipment or structures.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience:
Metal Fabrication Specialist I
No experience required.
Metal Fabrication Specialist II
1 year in welding, sheet metal work. Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent. College education and/or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Licenses and Certifications:
Commercial Driver License – Must have or obtain within 120 calendar days from date of hire a Class A Texas Commercial Driver License with an N endorsement.
If performing welding, must be certified in accordance with the Basic Qualification Test as specified by TxDOT Construction Bulletin.

Metal Fabrication Specialist II
All of the above, and
Considerable knowledge of:
The methods, materials and metals used in welding and metal fabrication
Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques
Some knowledge of:
Inventory/stock control procedures
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Subject to noise
Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at
Standing-prolonged periods of time
Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers

This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
Please note that the Department of Transportation’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) – does not authorize “medical marijuana” under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
During emergency situations, may be required to work hours other than regularly schedule including nights, holidays, and weekends.
