A Brief Summary of This Position:
This individual contributor is accountable for training welders through Valmont’s welder training program and continually educating existing workforce. This individual may have to administer weld qualification tests and perform destructive testing per AWS D1.1 latest revision. The role may require travel when called upon to assist other Valmont sites with training needs. This role involves solving welding related problems in the plant and in the field, if required. The position is responsible for performing new welder training per a developed curriculum along with technical training and qualification. The position works closely with employees and supervisors to identify training needs and support new and existing employees in developing the necessary skill-sets to be successful in their assigned positions.

Essential Functions:
Incumbent evaluates potential welding candidates and maintains records associated with evaluations.

Must be able to train on topics including, but not limited to manipulative skills to weld, knowledge and understanding of the process and equipment, safe welding, metal cutting practices, blue print reading with welding symbols and Valmont WPS’s and Specifications.

Provide training on Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW-G), Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) and occasionally Pulsed Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW-P)

Incumbent provides one-on-one coaching and training support to new and existing welding staff.

Maintains and updates welding certifications for appropriate departments.

Other Important Details about the Role:
Orders and tracks test materials, as needed.

The ability to coordinate with the Quality department for weld testing and quality requirements.

The ability to travel up to 20% of the time, within the United States.

Must be able to recognize safety hazards and provide a safe working environment to trainees.

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

High School Diploma/GED and 5+ years of work/educational experience or Associates Degree with 2+ years relevant experience or Bachelor’s Degree

5 years of experience working in a manufacturing/welding environment

Knowledge of and experience with the following welding processes: Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW)

Knowledge of flame cutting and plasma cutting.

Ability to teach and train new employees the necessary skills to become a certified welder including: manipulative skills to weld, knowledge and understanding of the process and equipment, safe welding, metal cutting practices, blue print reading with welding symbols and an understanding of Valmont WPS’s and Specifications.

Demonstrate a commitment to Safety through excellent safety practices and behaviors and conform to all Valmont safety policies and procedures.

The ability to obtain Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) and Certified Welding Educator (CWE) accreditations within one year.

Experience with AWS D1.1 Structural Steel Welding Code.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access).

Knowledge of Valmont’s quality procedures, standards, and practices.

Associates Degree in Welding Technology

Certified Welding Inspector accreditation (CWI) from The American Welding Society (AWS)

Certified Welding Educator accreditation (CWE) from The American Welding Society (AWS)

Certified Associate Welding Inspector accreditation (CAWI) from The American Welding Society (AWS)
