About Us

The Fleet Services Division of the Department of Public Works is recruiting for a Welder to join the Fleet Services team in Miller Lake.

This is your opportunity to become part of the team who are pivotal in ensuring the Public Works Fleet is running smoothly and safely. Without our Welder proactive measures; equipment issues or failures could lead to an interruption of services provided. As the Welder you are one of our key team players who supports the overall safety and efficiency of our provincial road network.

About Our Opportunity

Under the general supervision of the Fleet Service Coordinator or Welding Shop Supervisor (Miller Lake), the Welder may do one or a combination of the following or other related duties required to ensure the efficient fabrication/repair of road maintenance equipment and ferries. District operating policies and procedures and geographic differences across the Province may dictate the nature and methods of the work performed.

Primary Accountabilities

Under the general direction of the Fleet Service Coordinator, the Welder will be assigned repair/fabrication work on highway maintenance and snow removal equipment by dismantling, straightening, reshaping and reassembling parts such as snow plows and wings, truck bodies and frames employing appropriate welding techniques. This may also include repair assignments to provincial ferry operations throughout the Province. Fabricates and welds replacement parts. Troubleshoots and repairs welding equipment as required and ensures materials are properly rigged for lifting and all welding is performed according to department safety standards. Candidates will be expected to respond to winter emergency repair needs at night, weekends and holidays.

Qualifications and Experience

Grade 12 plus a red seal certification in Welding issued by the Department of Labour and Advanced Education and four (4) years of related experience.

Knowledge of auto body and sheet metal work and the ability to read and interpret blueprints and hydraulic schematics is also required.

Basic skill requirements should consist of training and experience with torch work, knowledge of welding codes, working in an industrial environment, design ability and a mechanical aptitude.

A strong customer service focus, effective problem solving skills, the ability to learn new tasks and will be well versed in Department and Industry Occupational Health and Safety rules and regulations.

A valid driver’s license is required.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a mechanical repair environment occasioned by noise, smoke and gas fumes and, at times, adverse weather conditions while operating in a field environment. Considerable standing, lifting, carrying and moving about is a requirement of this position.

Additional Information

This opportunity is for a 52-week Year-Round position – the duties of which are full time and continuous in nature.

Most of your work will be located at Miller Lake, but you will be required to travel and work in other mechanic shops throughout the province as required.

Pay Grade: WELDER

Salary Range: $26.20 Hourly
