Job Profile

The Welder operates welding equipment to weld ferrous and non-ferrous metals. A steady hand and attention to detail is important. Knowledge of different kinds of metals and their properties is essential.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints or welding process specifications
  • Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments
  • Operate submerged Arc welding equipment
  • Operate manual or semi-automatic flame-cutting equipment
  • Operate brazing and soldering equipment
  • Operate metal shaping machines
  • Repair worn parts of metal products by welding on extra layers
  • Determine the appropriate welding equipment or method based on requirements
  • Set up components for welding according to specifications (e.g. cut material with powered saws to match measurements)
  • Operate angle grinders to prepare the parts that must be welded
  • Align components using calipers, rulers etc. and clamp pieces
  • Weld components using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment in various positions (vertical, horizontal or overhead)
  • Repair machinery and other components by welding pieces and filling gaps
  • Test and inspect welded surfaces and structure to discover flaws
  • Maintain equipment in a condition that does not compromise safety

  • Follow prescribed safety standards, rules and regulations
  • Participate in safety culture; lead by example
  • Identify non-conformities and participate in their resolution
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives
  • Recommend improvements and participate in improvement plans in production methods, equipment, operating procedures and working conditions
  • Maintain a well-organized and clean facility as per Prairie Machine vision
  • Maintain all equipment and tools per recommended procedures
  • Maintain a healthy work environment

Qualifications

  • Apprentice / Journeyperson or equivalent relevant experience
  • Valid CWB certified required
  • 3+ years experience with Mig (steel) required
  • Experience with Tig, stainless steel & aluminum is an asset
  • Exemplify safety conscious attitude
