Overview

The Welding Engineering Technologist is responsible for providing welding technical support to all programs at three Seaspan Shipyards (VSY, VSL, and VDC). The Welding Technologist also provides technical guidance for joint designs, weld procedure development, welding rates, distortion control, equipment evaluations, and weld quality to various departments. The position analyzes actual welding rates and works with production personnel to improve weld man-hour performance. The technologist supports Welding Engineer and implements weld procedures and processes in the Welding Applications Laboratory within the CoE. This role provides technical support to production trades, stage of construction supervisors, area managers.

Welding Engineering Technologist reports to VSY Senior Welding Engineer.

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 2 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver, V7P 2R2

Duties/Accountabilities

Prepare welding procedure specifications and procedure data sheets

Prepare test coupons and brief welders on the scope of welding procedure Test.

Supervise the weld procedure qualification testing and record variables during welding of test assemblies to develop procedure qualification records.

Creates technical documents such as Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Work Instructions (WI) and forms.

Monitor shipyard weld quality. Inform trades and area management of quality issues and work with them to resolve work not in accordance with standards, specifications, and contract requirements

Perform continuous review of welding procedures. Implement improvements in processes and materials to improve both quality and productivity

Monitor trends in the industry and implement welding best practices

Resolve production welding issues. Support initiatives to improve productivity, reduce rework and improve quality across all shipyards

Performs experimental welding to evaluate new equipment, technologies, and techniques, with the aim of introducing them into Seaspan.

Support Welding Engineering tasks and projects

Research new welding technologies and trends and evaluates their application to improve or remedy existing welding processes.

Reviews subcontractors’ welding procedures, processes and documentation including welding inspections reports.

Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualification Requirements

Diploma or college degree in Metallurgy or Welding Engineering Technology (or a related field)

Minimum (5) years of pertinent experience in a welding industry, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certificate/Diploma in Weld Inspection, Welding supervision, and/or Weld technologist will be considered an asset

Skills, knowledge, and Required Competencies

Good understanding of International, and Canadian material, welding and testing codes, rules and standards (e.g., ISO, Lloyds, DNV, CSA, ASME, ASTM, AWS, etc.)

Practical knowledge of shipbuilding welding processes and equipment including but not limited to Mechanized/Automatic welding, shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), flux core arc welding (FCAW), metal core arc welding (MCAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), submerged arc welding (SAW), gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), and stud welding.

Detailed knowledge of welding procedures development and qualification (PQR, WPS and WPDS).

Technical understanding of quality control, inspection procedures, and welding metallurgy.

Ability to prepare technical documents including Standard Operating Standards (SOP), and Work Instructions (WI).

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

Strong technical, problem solving communication and interpersonal skills.

Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office suite, Replicon and JD Edwards P2P.

Ability to read and interpret specifications, drawings, and 3D model.

Must be physically fit and capable of repeated lifts of 20Kgs and continuously standing for long periods of time.

Ability to obtain industrial security

Ability to prioritize workflow.
